It was the morning of January 26th, 2013, the day of the final stop of the I.E. Skate Series at Palm Springs Skatepark. A big storm was coming through the Inland Empire and we were unsure if the contest was going to go on, but with the help of some helpful volunteers drying the park and good blessings from the Skate Gods, the contest was on! There seemed to be clouds everywhere around us except for in Palm Springs where the sun was shining and the ripping was commencing!

Up first was the young groms, the 10 and Under division. These little guys were charging the flow bowl harder than ever. It’s so awesome to see such young kids ripping so hard! This is the future! Coming in 3rd spot was 7 year old Dylan Powell, who was the youngest competitor of the day. Dylan showed off his impressive bag of tricks and smooth lines all over the bowl. It was Ryland Mancilla in 2nd place with great lines and technical lip tricks, but it wasn’t enough to overtake young Kai Yamasaki who walked away with the win in Palm Springs and clenching the overall title in the 10 and under division.

In the bowl next was the 11-13 year olds. All of these kids were using the bowl to its fullest! Nathan Rennie came in 5th place with his Ninja silent wheels and big barking grinds. Young Ethyn Deamos came in the 4th spot with his extremely deep bag of unique tricks from all eras of skateboarding. Rounding off the podium was Joseph Campos who rode the bowl with such style and finesse. The top 2 skaters had to compete in a 30 second sudden death tie breaker. David Branom was in the bowl with full force blasting big alley oop backside airs over the hips and riding the bowl like a local, but it wasn’t enough to knock Julian Torres who won the tie breaker, and clenching the overall title, with his long flawless lines and smooth style.

It was time for the 14-16 year olds. Rounding off the podium was Joshua “Peanut Butter” Conley with his long grinds thought the corners and smooth style. In the 2nd spot was Ryan Hill with his nice backside floaters over the hips and some really good lines. Just knocking out Ryan was Troy Amelotte with his deep bag of lip trickery, smooth lines, and great style. Clenching the overall title was Devin McCaffery who came in 5th in Palm Springs giving him enough points to take the top spot by 5 points over 2nd place Joshua Conley.

It was now time for the Sponsored ladies to show Palm Springs what they had to offer. Coming in the 4th spot was Victoria Serna, who just came off a broken ankle from stop #2 at North Fontana only 3 months ago. Victoria rode the bowl with some smooth lines and grinds showing that she is just as tough if not more tough than the dudes out there! Rounding off the podium in 3rd and clenching the overall title for 13 and under Girls was young Tarryn Ross, who was the sole skater for the 13 and under girls to show up. She wasn’t afraid to ride with the big girls and show off her skills. Coming in the 2nd spot was Pauline Branom with her long lines and smooth runs. Taking the top spot for the girls and clenching the Overall Sponsored Girls title was Arianna Carmona with her fast lines, smooth style, and deep bag of tricks! Arianna ripped every contest in the series winning every contest except for stop #1 where she finished 2nd.

It was now time for the main event, the Open Sponsored division. Rounding off the 8th spot in the finals was Robert Gonzalez, followed by Nathan Yerman in the 7th spot. I (Ronnie Yerman)decided to join in the fun and take a break from the mic to skate and ended up making finals and walking away with the 6th spot over my little brother. In the 5th spot was Denzel White who ripped the bowl both regular and switch with his extremely deep bag of tricks and unique lines. In the 4th spot was David Branom,
pulling double duty and ripping all day. In the 3rd spot was Logan Catt who ripped the whole bowl with style until he took a hard slam to his knee trying a Casper Drop-in on the extension. In the 2nd spot was Tristan Rennie who absolutely destroyed the bowl with his high speed attack, extremely long runs without repeating any tricks, and blasting head high airs over the hips. It wasn’t enough to take out Mason Merlino from the top spot. Mason destroyed the bowl with his insane lip tricks, big airs and bonelesses over the channel and just complete annihilation of the everything in his path!

Walking away with the in the 3rd spot of the Overall Open Sponsored Division and $100 was David Branom. In the 2nd spot and walking away with $200 was Logan Catt. Taking the Overall Championship and $400 was Tristan Rennie who absolutely destroyed every contest in this series, winning half of the contests and coming in 2nd the other half. Congratulations Tristan!

The 1st annual I.E. Skate Series was a great success. I want to Congratulate Kai Yamasaki, Julian Torres, Devin McCaffery, Arianna Carmona, and Tristan Rennie for walking away with the overall titles! Thanks to all the sponsors and skaters for coming out we couldn’t have done it without you guys, and a BIg Thanks to Mike Serna for helping all of us here at the Fontana Skateparks organize this event! Its only going to get bigger and better from here on out! See you guys this summer for the 2nd Annual IE Skate Series!

Stop #3 of the I.E. Skate Series was held on Saturday December 15th, 2012 at the Upland Skatepark. This was the 2nd attempt at Stop #3, the event was postponed due to rain on the original date November 17th. It was looking like we were going to get rained out again, with a storm passing through the whole weekend, but the skate gods came through and the sky held out for the contest! The crew was there at 9 am drying out the monstrous full pipe and bowl, getting it ready for the onslaught of ripping that was about to ensue.

First up was the young guns, the 10 and under division. These kids showed no fear in the massive bowl, it must have been 3 times their size at least! It was young Dylan Powell, who was the youngest competitor out there at 7 years old, rounding off the podium. Dylan ripped the shallow section and charged the full pipe like a grown man. In the 2nd spot was Kai Yamasaki, with his technical lip tricks and smooth lines. But it was enough to take over the top spot from little CJ Collins. CJ was killing the entire bowl with ollie north’s from shallow to deep and fast stylish lines all over the place.

In the bowl next was the 11-13 year olds. Young Nathan Rennie came in the 4th spot with his huge pipe rides and smooth lines all over the bowl with effortless style. Rounding off the podium was Ethyn Deamos who showed off his bag of unique tricks which earned him the 3rd spot. Just beating out Ethyn was Julian Torres, who rode the bowl with power and style on every wall, but it just wasn’t enough to beat out David Branom for the top spot on the podium. David was ripping all day long with fast lines, high pipe rides, and big airs all over the place. David showed he wasn’t playing around and was there to win!

Up next was the 14-16 year old division. Coming in the 4th spot was Devin McCaffery, who on his first and only run slipped out coming from the pipe and took a heavy slam onto his face, chipping a tooth and scraping him up a bit. Devin, showing he’s a true skateboarder, was all smiles after the slam and cheering on his peers! In the 3rd spot it was Joshua “Peanut Butter” Conley, followed by Alex Melendez in 2nd, but it was Austin Carey who ran away with the win in his division.

It was time for the Girls to show what they had in the huge bowl. In the 3rd spot was Chasity Collins, who even after hanging up and taking a heavy slam in the shallow, continued to finish her runs and show that its not only the guys who can be tough out there! In the 2nd spot was Pauline Branom, with her smooth style and long lines. But it was Arianna Carmona who once again came out on top. Arianna was riding the bowl like a pro, with high over vert frontside airs in the pipe, big airs in the bowl and a smooth style throughout the entire thing. She definitely earned the win!

Before the main event, we gave some of the older guys a chance to get some shredding in also! we had a high pipe ride contest for a deck and it was Danny Sandoval who went the highest with a huge frontside thruster getting way over vert. It was a close call between some others but everyone agreed that Danny went the highest.

Now it was time for the main event, the Sponsored Mens division. All of these guys were charging the bowl each with a fire in their eyes. Coming in the 3rd spot and pulling double duty, was David Branom. David turned up the fire some more in this division taking his airs higher and skating faster than he has all day. In the 2nd spot was Aidan Dansey who was butting together some really great lines linking tricks together effortlessly, and even coming extremely close to a big 540 in the big bowl. But none of that was enough to hold off Tristan Rennie who walked away with the win. Tristan rode the park with such speed and style that it looked like he wasn’t even trying, using every bit of the bowl and throwing tricks in wherever he could, there was no stopping him.

Thanks to everyone who came out to this event despite being postponed. A big thanks to all the skaters for putting on an amazing show, all the sponsors that made this possible, and a big thanks to Mike Serna for helping make this whole series happen. We wouldn’t be able to do this without all of your guys support. See everyone at the 4th and Final Stop at Palm Springs on January 26th, 2013!

As some of you may know, Action Park Alliance (Alliance Skateparks) has been contracted to operate the Palm Springs Skatepark. We have been working with the city for a few years to make this happen. The city has used Pool Staff in the past along with charging a daily fee and currently is contracting a security company to help with the skatepark . With that said, neither of these options have truly utilized the skatepark to its full capabilities. We are excited the city is giving our company a chance to take this park to the next level. Please take a look at our plans as well as the renderings below. Please lets us know what you think once you have the facts regarding what we are doing with the Palm Springs community.

We will be charging a membership of $15 for Residents and $25 for non-residents annually. Memberships good for 365 days from date of purchase

We will be required to enforce Helmets for all participants as required by state law. We will work with the city to allow pros the option during demos. Helmets will be $2 for rent by the day

We have designed a 2,400 sq. ft. Air conditioned shop with the city that will house the following

Park Check-in

Rhythm Skateshop (Similar Shop as we have at our Texas Location)

Concessions

Two restrooms

Two computers for homework

Arcade Games

Lounge area with couches and Big screen TV

Automatic doors for entrance and exit

We are looking for a date sometime this spring to have the building in place and the new program running

We will be looking to hire 4 to 6 local skateboarders to help operate the park as we did in Fontana

Staff will be cleaning the park daily

The park will have expanded hours such as later closing times and early morning sessions when the temperature demands them

We will host an annual schedule of events and cookouts

We will host Camps and Lessons

The park will have a team such as our team in Texas that won The Berrics United Nations last year (DREAM)

If you are interesting in finding out more about the park/shop team email us.

We will be building a PSP Facebook page and instagram soon to keep communication as open as possible

We look forward to working with everyone in the local community that has helped make the strong skate scene.

I.E. Skate Series
Stop #2 Fontana North

Saturday October 20th was stop #2 of the I.E. Skate series. Stop #2 was held in the Roman Pool at North Fontana Skatepark. The skies looked a bit threatening that morning, with some light drizzle early on, but the skies ended up holding out all day and clearing up by the time we were ready to get things started.

It was the young guns in the 10 and Under division that got the day started off. These kids tore the bowl apart, its crazy to see these little kids shred so hard! Rylan Mancilla rounded off the podium, putting together some good runs. Edging him out for the 2nd spot was our Stop #1 winner Kai Yamasaki. But it was little CJ Collins who took the top spot above Kai. CJ rode the bowl with power and style, blasting airs and showing his deep bag of tricks to take the win in the 10 and Under division.

Up next in the pool was the 11-13 year olds. It was David Branom who would take the 3rd spot with his big airs and long runs. In the 2nd spot was little Joseph Campos, who looked like a young Steve Caballero in the bowl with his big pro tec helmet and extremely smooth style. But it was G.I. Julian Torres who came into the bowl ready to battle, warpaint and all! Julian was in the Halloween spirit and was dressed in camouflage and ready for war, he was charing it the whole contest putting together some great lines with a smooth style. Julian also won stop #1, so we will see if anyone can unseat him from the top spot in the overall points race.

It was time for the 14-16 year old division. It was Jerren Duke taking the 3rd spot with an interesting bag of tricks and some unique lines. Ryan Hill took 2nd place after coming off a stop #1 win. It was newcomer Tyler Hollenbeck who would take the top spot in the 14-16 division, with big frontside airs and a raw style, it was enough to take 1st in the Roman.

During Women’s practice Victoria Serna took a bad slam on a Rock n Roll and ended up breaking her ankle. She was tough and even came back to the contest to watch the sponsored finals after her hospital trip. Get well soon Victoria!

All of the girls were charging it hard in the contest! Sarah Thompson was charging the bowl all day and it paid off for her with a 3rd place finish. Pauline Branom edged out Sarah for the 2nd spot, but it was Arianna Carmona who took the top spot in the Women’s Division with her long runs and smooth style she was able to put it all together and walk away with the win.

Now it was time for the qualifying round of the Open Sponsored Division. We had 18 skaters in this division and we were taking 8 of them to the finals. All of these guys were skating hard trying the get into the finals! I don’t think the Roman Pool has ever taking a beating like that. Everyone put it all out there for a spot in the finals. In the end it was Johnny Abernathy in the 8th spot, followed by Nick Daiello, Robert Gonzalez, Hayden McKenna, Aidan Damnsey, Aidan Damnsey and Logan Catt. The top 2 spots were filled by Tristan Rennie in the 2nd place showing off his amazingly deep bag of tricks and effortless style, riding the bowl like its his own backyard. But it was Josh Rodriguez who overtook the #1 qualifying spot showing why he is one of the top bowl skaters out there right now!

It was time to 30 and over guys in the bowl for a jam. It was more of a fun session for these guys than a contest. Bill Rennie ended up 3rd, followed by Kevin Burke in 2nd, and Steve Alba taking the top spot showing he is a true master of pool skating.

Now it was time for the Open Sponsored finals. There was a twist thrown in for the finals though, it was going to be held in the Peanut Bowl. We were going to see how these guys can adapt to an entirely different bowl. Everyone was ripping the Peanut just as hard as they were in the Roman. In the end it was Logan Catt rounding off the podium. Logan was charging it hard with great style, big airs, and he even threw a Christ Air in his last run. Tristan Rennie and Josh Rodriguez were battling each other for the top spot. Both of them were going higher than everyone. Tristan put together some amazing lines and linked all of them together seamlessly never repeating a trick. Josh was charging with a fast smooth style and showing off his deep bag of lip tricks and airs. In the end the judges still couldn’t decide and it had to come down to a tie breaker. Since both Tristan and Josh were trying 540’s while the judges figured out the scores we decided that the first 540 would win the contest. Josh heard this mid run and pulled the 540 on the next wall and clenched the win over Tristan.

Thanks to everyone who came out to this event. A big thanks to all the skaters for putting on an amazing show, all the sponsors that made this possible, and a big thanks to Mike Serna for helping make this whole series happen. See you guys November 17th at Upland Skatepark for stop #3!

The first ever I.E. Skatepark Series kicked off this past Saturday September 29th, 2012. The first stop was held at the South Fontana skatepark in the Clover bowl, with 3 more stops in the coming months including North Fontana, Upland, and Palm Springs. The series, which was put together by Fontana Skateparks and the Serna Skate Clan, is showcasing the raw bowl skating talent of kids and adults alike from all over the Southern California area.

Things got started with the 10 and under division. These young guns showed no fear in the big clover bowl. Little Zach Herrera came out charging it with big 50-50s in the deep end and even pulling a frontside 270 to axle stall in the shallow end and
securing his spot on the podium. Rylan Mancilla was charging the bowl each run and put together some great lines, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Kai Yamasaki for the top spot in the 10 and under division. Kai was ripping the clover bowl like a grown man
throwing big backside airs and he even threw a Les Twist in there.

Up next it was the 11-13 year olds. These kids showed that they are the next generation of young bowl shredders. Ethyn Deamos displayed a deep bag of tricks, old and new, but it wasn’t quite enough to overtake the 3rd spot from David Branom. David put together some solid runs using every part of the bowl and walked away with 3rd spot. It was Wheeler Alba coming in the 2nd spot with some unique tricks(including a manual around the bowl on his knees to roll in!), good lines, and high speed runs. But it
was Julian Torres coming out on top. With his unique lines, stylish airs, and fluid style he came out on top of the 11-13 division.

The next division was the 14-16 year olds. Coming in the 4th spot was Joshua “Peanut Butter” Conley. Just edging out Peanut Butter for the podium was Devin McCaffery with intricate lines using every bit of the bowl. Coming in 2nd was Greg Webb with his proper frontside airs and straight up inverts. But it wasn’t enough to hold off Ryan Hill who walked away with the win in the 14-16 division.

The 14 and under Girls were up next with Teris Alba rounding off the podium
followed by Tarryn Ross in 2nd and Arianna Carmona coming out on top.

In next was the Masters. These guys were all out there doing it for fun and just having a great time skating with each other, showing what skateboarding is really about, having fun with your friends no matter how old you are! WE even had some of the young guns doing the judging for these guys, since most of our judges were skating in the Masters division. It was Art Miranda rounding off the podium followed by longtime buddy Kevin Burke. But it was Micke Alba taking the win showing that 30+ years of
skating under your belt truly makes you a master!

The sponsored girls were in the bowl next. Every single one of these girls were killing the bowl and it was a tough one to judge! Rounding off the podium was Sarah Thompson, with some solid runs and smooth style Sarah earned her podium position. Just edging Sarah out was Arianna Carmona, who put together some great runs with big grinds and airs, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Julz Lynn who is no stranger to contests. Julz put together some amazing runs with airs in and out of every part of the bowl and big stand up grinds both frontside and backside secured here the spot atop the podium.

It was now time for the main event, the Open Sponsored division. Every single one of the 18 guys in this division killed the bowl! With only 6 people making it into the finals, these guys were giving it all for a coveted spot in the top 6. Everyone was charging it during the jam sessions and pulling out everything they can. It was absolutely nuts! Once the finals were set it was time for the Jam to begin. Each rider in the final got 2 intro runs straight into a 12 minute jam. Frank Fernandez rounded off the top 6 with his spontaneous runs, rolling in and out from every which way and charging whatever was in his way. Little Nathan Yerman came in the 5th spot with his big styling airs over the hips tweaking everything as far as it possibly could go and putting together some solid runs in the hectic final, even after a hard slam to flat in the deep end he still kept going! Just edging out Nathan was Dontae Overton. Dontae put together some great runs with big airs, inverts, good lines, and even pulled a layback air on the extension. Making it onto the podium was Logan Catt who was going all out all day long with ultra tweaked backside airs and judos in the deep end and some amazing lines throughout the whole bowl. But in the end it came down to Hayden McKenna and Tristan Rennie who absolutely destroyed every bit of the bowl. Each of them with an extremely deep bag of tricks, great style, and intricate lines. It was such a close call that the judges couldn’t even decide who took it after the jam, therefore taking it to a final run sudden death showdown between the two. Tristan was in first starting off the one run showdown. Tristan put together a long run showing off his deep, unique bag of tricks and lines before finally stepping off on huge backside air. Hayden was in next and he knew exactly what he was up against. He put together a solid run and threw some amazing tricks but it wasn’t quite enough to overtake Tristan who ended up walking away with the win in the sponsored division.

This was a great event and it was just the first stop! Congratulations to all the winners and a HUGE thank you to everybody that helped put this event together. Big thanks to Mike Serna and the Serna Skate Clan, to Gatorade for keeping everyone hydrated throughout the hot day, all of the sponsors of the event, thanks to all of our judges throughout the day(you guys did not have an easy job!), and a big thanks to everyone that came out and showed support! See you guys October 20th for Stop #2 at North Fontana!
