Anaheim Breaks Ground on a New Skatepark at Boysen Park
Anaheim has broken ground at Boysen Park, adding a half-acre skatepark to a neighborhood landmark locals have known for decades.
Every city has a park with a nickname. In Anaheim, it is Airplane Park: the place with the old Navy Cougar jet, the big patch of grass, and now a fresh reason to bring a board.
Anaheim has broken ground on a new skatepark at Boysen Park, the first move in a larger refresh of the site near State College Boulevard and Vermont Avenue. The City calls it its ninth skatepark. Neighbors who have watched the park grow up around that airplane will have a new line to watch take shape, too.
What is coming to the park
The plan is a half-acre, $1.6 million concrete skatepark with a pool-style bowl, quarter pipe, mini half-pipe, rails and ledges. Anaheim also lists seating and shade structures, which sounds simple until you remember how much of skateboarding happens between attempts.
The City of Anaheim announcement identifies Schmidt Design Group as the skatepark designer and Moalej Builders Inc. as the construction contractor.

More than a new slab of concrete
A new skatepark is a big moment on opening day. The better part comes later: the first after-school session, the kid who finally drops in, the older locals passing along a line, the regulars who make a public space feel looked after without anyone having to say it out loud.
Boysen is built for that kind of overlap. The skatepark is Phase 1 of a broader city project, with the rest of the work planned in stages so much of the park can remain open. Anaheim says the later phase could bring an updated airplane-themed playground, paths, native landscaping, shaded picnic areas, basketball court improvements, a pollinator garden, restrooms and more parking.
A project shaped close to home
The City says neighboring students, families and youth groups took part in workshops that helped shape the plan. That is the part worth holding onto as the site moves from drawings to dirt: the best parks give a community something to recognize as its own.
