Minneapolis Opens the New Central Gym Park Skatepark
A skatepark envisioned through years of planning at Central Gym Park reached its opening celebration this summer.
The long way from a plan to a session
Some parks arrive quickly. Others stay in the notebook for a long time before concrete ever shows up. Central Gym Park belongs to the second kind, with a new Minneapolis skatepark that grew out of planning documents, design direction and community engagement spread across years.
Construction began in fall 2025, paused through winter and resumed in spring. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board celebrated the completed park on June 11, a small line on a city calendar that represents a much longer chain of people pushing the idea forward.
The paper trail is part of the point here. Years of site conversations and planning materials rarely feel cinematic, but they are how a local want becomes a public project. By the time a park opens, the session has already been years in the making.
A PROJECT WITH A LONG MEMORY
The project builds the second phase of improvements set out in the South Service Area Master Plan. The Park Board has retained the engagement materials and site renderings, which makes the public record part of the park’s story too.
