Montreal Opens Its First Skatepark in Pierrefonds-Roxboro
Montreal’s Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough opened its first skatepark with demos, lessons, music, friendly contests and a crowd that came ready to use it.
More than a ribbon-cutting
There is a particular kind of opening that gets it right: do not just cut a ribbon. Hand out boards, turn up the music, let people try the place, and give the day a reason to stay in the memory of the neighborhood.
That was the shape of the opening at Parc d’À-Ma-Baie in August. The borough says hundreds of residents came through for demonstrations, free introductory lessons, skateboard customization workshops, community booths and friendly competitions.
The first event did not ask people to understand the park from a distance. It gave them ways in: a demo to watch, a lesson to try, a board to touch, a reason to stay. That is a useful opening-night model for any public space hoping to become part of its neighborhood quickly.

The $1.7 million park is the borough’s first, located near the youth centre, community centre and Sunnybrooke REM station. The setting makes it more than a destination session: it is part of the local route.
